STIHL 032 Important Safety Precautions for Chain Saw Users Warning! Kickback may occ ur when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or whe n the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. This contact may abruptly stop the saw chain and in some cases may cause a lightning fast reverse reaction , kicking the guide bar up and back towards the user, or push the guide bar back towards the ope rator. Kickback may cause you to lose control of the saw. As a cha in saw user, you can take seve ral steps to kee p your cutt ing jobs free from accident or injury due to kickb ack.
A. With a bas ic understanding of kick back , you can reduce or eliminate the eleme nt of surprise. It is a sudden surprise that contributes to acc idents. B. Kee p a good firm grip on the saw with both hands, the right hand on the rear handle, and the left hand on the fron t handl e, when the engine is runn ing. Use a firm grip with thumb s and fingers encircling the chain saw handle s. A firm grip can neutralize kickback and help you ma intain control of the saw. Don’tlet go. E. Do not overreac h or cut above shoulder height. F. Follo w manufa cturer’s sha rpeni ng and maintenance instructions for the saw chain. G. Only use replacement bars and chains specified by the man ufacturer or the equiva lent. The followin g additional safety precautions should be observed by all users of chain saws : 1. Do not operate a chain saw whe n you are fatigued. 2. Use safety footwear; snug-fitting clothing; protective gloves ; and eye, hearing, and head pro tection devices. 3. Use caution when handling fuel. Move the chain saw at least 10 feet (3 m) from the fueling point before starting the engin e. 4.
